Samsø gets the world's first biogas-ferry
Samsø will be free of fossil fuels by 2030. The municipality has decided that the island's new ferry, SamsøFærgen, will be the first in the world to sail on biogas. It is part of the municipality's plan to be free of fossil fuels by 2030. Already in 2007, the island was self-sufficient in renewable energy.
"The special thing about it is that it will be the EU's first gas ferry. Initially, we'll be supplied on the gas from tank, but in the long term, we must make our own biogas on the island, and then it becomes the world's first biogas ferry, "says Søren Stensgård , who is head of the Technical Department on the island.
The ferry is to start sailing on LNG until biogas production is underway. It will have a capacity of 160 cars and 600 passengers. It is OSK- ShipTech in Aarhus who designed the 200 million kroner ferry which is being equipped with four Wärtsilä dual-fuel engine.
The new ferry which will from autumn 2014, be operating services between Hou and Samsø is already under construction at Remontowa shipyard in Poland. The ferry will be completed on September 15, 2014 , 14 days before the current ferry on the route Kanhave, cease on the route.
